You generally undo 2 or 3 13mm bolts and drop the strut off complete. I would NOT recommend undoing the nut which normally holds the spring onto the strut, even with a broken spring. How do you propose to compress the spring?
These are good, always oil the rubber o ring on the filter when fitting.
The split boots are rubbish. Just get a proper job done. All the power from the engine goes through the CV joints and without lubricant they wear very rapidly. New joints/ shafts are significantly more expensive than getting the boots done.
The wings are the same part so the lights should fit. As for the bulb connectors, get the wiring from the breakers so if its different you will have it. I think the new lights will foul the old grille so some hacking away may be needed.
Hi there. The Lucas and Bosch pumps have different pullies as the taper on the shaft is different. I will probably have a pulley off a 1.9td Bosch pump somewhere, otherwise any breakers yards with any of the 1.9td engined vehicles will do. The later pulleys are visually different , being of a lighter construction, but are interchangeable as are pullies from turbo or non turbo engines. They all have the same number of teeth ( think about it) so that would include 205 306 405 406 BX ZX Xantia. The XUD engines were also fitted in Freightrover vans and some Suzuki Vitaras. I also know where there is a 406 parked up with a Bosch pump.
A lenth of scaffolding pole on the end of a 3/4" b breaker bar does the trick every time. They need to be done up tight.
Change the sender before worrying about the engine.
A long thin plastic cover above the passengers feet somewhere, sometimes one screw and slide sideways. black filter will drop out with dead flies etc.
Depending on whose advice you read if the milage isn't done , then the belt should be changed on a time basis. Some books say 5 years , some say 10 but 14 years is really pushing it, however low the milage. Please get it done , it could go any day. The cover bolts are a right little Ba!"£$%^^d to reach ,once the engine is supported and the cover is off , it's not too bad a job.
Like it says in the heading. The 03 plated Expert Mk1 ( pre facelift)that I bought to do as a camper, is not going back on the road. It was parked under an overgrown shrub for far too long and is just too rusty underneath, both sills are shot and all in all , it's just too much work to be worth doing. So, it's got good doors, rear lights, headlights new front arms , new rear brake cylinders and shoes , by the look of it. The engine is knackered, but no one really knows why , it was doing oil in the water so might just be the filter water cooler adapter. And then it wouldn't re start and then it was left, so who knows...
Anyway the parts are all there if you want, I'm in Pembrokeshire, which is a lovely place to visit, so you could have some parts and a holiday...

What you are looking at is a Mahle filter housing for a 2.0 HDi - dependant on year it could be either a Bosch or a Siemens pump. This type of pump is not exchangeable for a Bosch mechanical pump , it is a completely different system. The Bosch mechanical injectors blow off at 175 bar . The Hdi common rail system runs at 2,000 bar or 29,000 psi. It's like comparing hamsters and wellington boots, they don't have a lot in common......
For anything veg related I can only suggest you join this forum : http://vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/mybbforum/ There is a lot of expertise on here , all problems looked at and usually explained and sorted. A helpful group , but please do a bit of basic research on the site before asking questions, as the same straightforward questions sometimes get asked over and over again.
messy yes , cheap .... very . Worth it , I think so.
Thanks everyone....
badrobot wrote:As far as I am aware you're allowed to run a 2500ltrs SVO before tax?
I believe there is apparently such a limit but can't see how they could ever police it.
EDIT
On trying to look this up I find as much miss-information as fact. Par for the course on the net!
This seems to be the root of the issue though :-
2.3 Fuel that can be legally used in petrol or diesel engine road vehicles
Apart from the circumstances described in this paragraph you must always use duty paid fuel. This would normally be petrol or diesel sold as road fuel from a fuel retailers.Certain biodiesel and fuel substitute producers and users, who meet the definition of ‘exempt producers’, can use limited amounts of fuel upon which duty has not been paid. For more details see section 4 of Notice 179E Biofuels and other fuel substitutes.
Biofuels and fuel substitutes are alternative fuels, they include:
biodiesel
bioethanol
refuse-derived fuel
non-fossil methane
vegetable oil
propane
other biomass sourcesAfter a speed read I see there are many exceptions and reductions in duty for various circumstances but can't see anything on exemption for a specified quantity.
Anyone got a reliable reference to info on limited use of veg oil?
Duty ( not tax) used to be payable on the fuel used. Hundreds of cheques for £19.14p ( or whatever)every month. It became more expensive to collect the duty than the income generated , so........ they introduced a 2500 litre exemption , below which no duty is payable. Above 2500 litres duty payable on all oil used.

This is what it looks like under the hood. does'nt seem like any of the pics offered up on here.
No mate , that is the fuel filter on a 2.0 Hdi.
"You see that "mushroom" on the top? That means it's for the 1.9TD - the turbocharged version so can't be used on the DW8."
Is DW8 non turbo and DW8B the turbo version then?
No it's the same engine just modified slightly ( version B) not a turbo. there is no Turbo DW8
The turbo 1.9 finished in 1999 when the 2.0 Hdi came out. The DW8 is the old school engine , it will run veg oil all day long if it has a Bosch pump. The Lucas /Delphi pump is weak and will fail. 99% of DW8's have a Lucas pump. So you need to fit a bosch pump off an older XUD engine. These are getting harder to come buy and its a not a perfectly simple swap, you need to change the pipes as well , and bend them to fit the differently placed injectors.
The 2.0 Hdi, is a completely different kettle of fish . It is a direct injection engine , not a Ricardo design. The fuel injection system is a high pressure common rail system and will not tolerate anything like a neat veg oil mix. You cant , ' fit a bosch pump' it's not the same engine design. There are people on the veg oil diesel forum who are having some success running veg/ derv/rug mixes like (90%svo+10%rug) 60% and 40% derv.
I've been running XUD's on wvo for the past 12 years, so have some idea of what works and what won't.
Planning a mark one camper conversion, but I'm very much aware that space is at a premium, especially width. Every inch of extra kitchen width is an inch off the bed width. So I'm looking for opinions on what is the minimum width for a 2 person sleeping space , I know it doesn't have to be as wide as a normal bed as you are not going to fall off, but it looks to me that to be reasonably comfy, you will end up with a very narrow kitchen. Other peoples opinions very valuable here, I only want to build it once! Thanks.
Sounds like a bargain to me . The old boy will have run the vehicle through the business , but used it as if it was a private car, I bet the business was still going , run by his son or someone > Write van off against tax, costs virtually nothing to run if the business is large enough to hide another vehicle in. Light use , its what you want.
On the old XUD it was cambelt at 72k miles, I see no reason why the DW8 ( same block, different bore and head) would be much different, so due on age NOW if not milage . Most people now do belt, waterpump and idlers all at the same time. At 16 years old , the belt is absolutely due to be changed , 5 or maybe ten years at the most, it may have been done.......
With the appropriate software and interface you can enable/ disable / alter most or all of the settings you refer to . Look for lexia pp2000 Theres also some free software , but I havent tried it PSACOM. Take it easy with the BSI, upset it and your van is bricked.
Bleeding may help , but all sounds like the clutch is nearly worn out. As the clutch wears usually the pedal pressure increases and the clutch releases right at the full extent of pedal travel .
306 is torsion bars.
The Dispatch has a beautifully simple set up. 2 coil springs, 2 shock absorbers, 2 rubber mountings and an 'axlebeam' ( or call it what you will).
The rubber mounts go and are a bast.. a bit of a job to change by all accounts. Coil springs also seem to fail depressingly often too, but at least they are fairly easy to change.
If it creaks , it's probably a spring, if it clunks over bumps its probably the bushes.
Plus a relay to latch on , so the horn keeps on going until the whole lot is switched off. I'll try and post a picture.
Up , down. Hot , cold . It's all done with flaps and electric motors. The hot water runs through the heater matrix all the time. On the air con models there will be a little vent somewhere around the dash area, behind it is a little unit with a fan and a thermister. Basically it pulls in and samples air from the vehicle measuring its temperature it then lets the AC ECU to decide on the flap positions.
These can clog up with fluff and stop working. Also check out the temperature flap motor. with engine running move setting from hot to cold , you should hear a little motor running . Find it and them check out and lub. Certainly on some older PSA stuff the heater is the first thing to be fitted to the bulkhead when the vehicle is built so removing is a lot of work. EG Change Xantia heater matrix 9 hours in the book ........
Those are hose , rather than electrical connectors. I would think its a filter of some kind either on the breather side of the tank or the supply side. After having checked its not damaged or leaking , tuck it out of the way and cable tie it there.
